Background

Imperial College London is a science-based academic institution with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The School of Public Health within the Faculty of Medicine is a world-class centre for research and teaching in epidemiology of chronic and infectious diseases, public health, primary health care and general practice, biostatistics, and health services research. The School of Public Health combines research at local, national, and international levels with translational work within the Imperial College Academic Health Science Centre and the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Hospital Trust. The School of Public Health also aims to translate research outcomes into health policy and education. Together with its research, teaching, and evidence-led policy work, the School of Public Health aims to address the major public health challenges of the 21st century.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics lies with the School of Public Health and has a strong research and development profile while also serving the increasing needs of education and service delivery for the Imperial College Faculty of Medicine. EPIC researchers play a key role in contributing to the department’s objectives.

Coordination of EPIC

Imperial College London’s School of Public Health works jointly with IARC to coordinate the EPIC cohort. Professor Elio Riboli and Professor Marc Gunter serve as co-PIs.

  • Coordination of all EPIC-Europe scientific research activity, including working groups on specific cancer sites
  • Studies on methodology, biostatistics, modelling, and big data
  • Studies on chronic diseases including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease and links with nutrition
  • Writing of papers, special reports, and supplements to scientific journals.
