Phyto-oestrogens are plant compounds
with oestrogen-like biological activity and occur particularly in legumes and
beans (Soya and tofu) and also in cereals, fruit and vegetables. There is some
evidence that a diet rich in phyto-oestrogens, such as that of traditional Asian
populations, is associated with a lower risk of some Western diseases such as
cardiovascular disease and some cancers. The study is addressing three main
issues:
- the level of phyto-oestrogen intake in the EPIC countries
- phyto-oestrogens and the risk of breast and prostate cancer
- phyto-oestrogens and the risk of fatal myocardial infarction
